Hip-Hop Responds to the Death of Comedian and Activist Dick Gregory

The world lost a real one Saturday (Aug. 19), as activist and comedian, Dick Gregory passed away at the age of 84. The witty, unapologetic comedian broke barriers in the 1960s, performing in white clubs when that was nearly unheard of. He would go on to appear on television, record successful comedy albums and inspire a legion of Black comedians who followed in his footsteps. He was also a man of the people, and was involved in the Civil Rights movement. His son Christian Gregory confirmed the passing on social media. “The family appreciates the outpouring of support and love, and respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time,” Gregory said. “More details will be released over the next few days.”

Members of the hip-hop community have taken to social media to express their thoughts on the late legend. T.I. posted a picture of himself and Gregory on Instagram along with the caption, “That time the legendary Dick Gregory came to my Birthday dinner to wish me blessings, strength,& lay some wisdom on me at the same time. Can’t thank you enough King. RIP????????.” Killer Mike remembers the time he met Gregory fondly. “My wife @shaybigga and I asked you when we 1st met u at an event @fahamupecou booked both us for to give us some marriage advice,” he captioned a picture of him and his wife posing with Gregory. “Your advice ‘Turn the TV off and go outside hold hands and look at a tree’. We still do it and it still works. This was the night I interviewed you and shay told you if you said the word ‘Bitch’ again she wud push u down lol…. u asked her was she one and she said ‘No’ and u responded ‘what u getting up set foe den?’ Mannnnnnn we love you Ba Ba Gregory and our marriage is better for having known u.
